30.06.2008snydeq writes “The Linux kernel development community has released a statement emphasizing the need for open source drivers. The statement, signed by 135 developers, is aimed at preventing future vendors from following the closed source path. One holdout cited is Nvidia. The Linux Foundation has also released a statement in support: ‘The Linux Foundation recommends that hardware manufacturers provide open source kernel modules. The open source nature of Linux is intrinsic to its success. We encourage manufacturers to work with the kernel community to provide open source kernel modules in order to enable their users and themselves to take advantage of the considerable benefits that Linux makes possible.’”

Though he’s lost 90% of his vision to macular degeneration, the social psychologist used VoiceOver, which he calls “the single most important technical invention for me,” to write his latest book on his Mac mini. “The Mac with VoiceOver is indispensable. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to write or edit my work.”
The Treo 800w Leak Parade Marches On

Engadget has posted yet another set of prerelease Treo 800w information this weekend. This time around a series of Sprint spec sheet’s reportedly taken from am internal training manual have been posted. There is little new information that hasn’t already been disclosed, nonetheless the slides show a few new device angles (such as the new Micro USB 2.0 connector) and a fresh screenshot of the default home screen.
The device is now all but certain to be formally announced sometime around July 13th. The Treo 800w is set to run Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and will include a 320×320 pixel touchscreen, EVDO Rev A wireless, Wi-Fi (with a dedicated on/off button), GPS functionality, a 2MP digital camera and 128 MB of built in memory. Awarding MacBook Pro an impressive score of 9 (out of 10), editors praised its thinness (calling it “impressive next to other notebooks in its class”), its fast GeForce 8600M GT graphic processor, its “top-notch” Intel processor, and its battery life. It also found Mac OS X “really, really slick.”
Red Hat Open-Sources RHN As “Spacewalk”
